I've come to the realization that my wife doesn't share my survivalist mentality, at all! Sure she thinks that the kids need to know how to shoot, and for the most part she has pretty conservative beliefs. She’s been doing a lot of the food storage work, although it’s basically for different reasons than I do it, but it all boils down to the same thing. We do have food to last us in a crisis, unfortunately, not all emergencies that come along allow you to stay at home where you have the food. Some of that food needs to be mobile, to the point that you can grab and go at a moments notice. I want to be able to get everything I need into my truck in under a half hour in order to bug out quickly.
I don’t really want to have to get our family Bug Out Kit (it has be more than a bag, there are 5 of us after all) together by myself, but it looks like I’m going to have to. Even more importantly, I don’t want to have to get it together in secret, I’m just afraid that she isn’t going to understand my intentions, or my mindset in getting one together.
I don’t figure that the #1 most important thing that belongs in a BOK will be too objectionable to anyone, other than space, but a few 5 gallon jerry cans of water won’t take up too much space down in “the hole” and it also shouldn’t take up too much space in the Jeep when it comes time to bug out. If you have to go, and go in a hurry, you never know where you’re headed, and you should have enough water in a convenient package to just grab and go with. Bottled water isn’t good for this because the amount of space that a case of bottled water takes up vs. the amount of water that case holds just doesn’t work out as well when you’re packing all the important shit up to get out of town.
I’ve been working on getting some freeze dried food together. I’m storing it in a 40mm ammo can down in the office closet. It tastes pretty good (at least I like what I’ve tried) and in the individual packages it will last for up to 7 years in your kit (just keep it below 75 degrees). If you get the mountain house food, each package is supposed to feed 2 people, so for my family we’d need 3 packs each meal, plus sides, and dessert. It’s really not all that bad cost wise if you just pick up a couple at a time, and considering that they will last for 7 years, just use the oldest ones that you have when you go out camping. That way you can keep rotating your stock.
One of the biggest problems that I think that I’m going to have in getting our bug out gear together is going to be getting a first aid kit together. Yeah, you’re laughing now, but if you are, your kids are nothing like mine. We got a new first aid kit just last summer, just a small one, but it had most everything that you need in it, even if most of the “extra” crap in there was crap, you know, the totally generic little scissors and tweezers that you figure will break the first time that you try to use them. Well, we put this kit in our room, where the good little children that call us Mom and Dad are forbidden to go without permission, and wouldn’t you know it, the damn thing was empty when I actually went to get into it. They think that the littlest scrapes and scratches need a band aid, so they go up there and get them, then they don’t tell us when we run out of anything, so we’re out until just after someone needs something.
The biggest problem for me will be arms, I know that I need to find a place to take the family shooting, and I really need to get my wife shooting, although I think I’ll be going insane in when she’s got a gun in her hands. When she was holding our 10/22 the other day she immediately put her finger on the trigger, I said something of course, considering that this is somewhat dangerous. It’s apparently how she was taught, unfortunately this doesn’t fly in the real world when you’re shooting with your family. Then, she told me that she didn’t like the way a gun “looked”, this scared the absolute shit out of me. I guess it comes down to me needing to get that part of the BOK together in secret, that’s going to be hard to do until I get some extra revenue coming in here.
